The Dallas Women’s Foundation hit a record in charitable giving this year, awarding $4.5 million via 198 grants to 144 organizations that benefit women and girls.
The biggest slice of funds — 45 percent — supported economic security, and 22 percent addressed health and safety. The group also supported women’s philanthropy, education, leadership and other issues.
About a quarter of the money came from the organization’s 32nd annual luncheon on Oct. 20, which netted $1.2 million.
The event attracted 1,400 people to the Hilton Anatole and featured Hope Jahren, a prominent geo-biologist and advocate for women in science.
Jahren’s speech focused on similarities between plants and humans and her experiences as a scientist. It was streamed live to about 10,000 girls in 20 Texas schools.
